In early July, I inked up with the homie Mvstermind (a local hip-hop artist & producer) for a Nine Network piece on the power of art in this time of healing. Him, along with a team of 5 musical artists came together to finalize an amazing song about the climate of things since the fatal shooting of Michael Brown in August 2014. "Speak Out" was originally created as a result of the Ferguson Commission's 'Arts Speak!' Youth Summit. We were able to sit in on the studio session as they finalized the song.
Acting as flies on the wall, we were able to capture the process behind the team producing & recording the song, in preparation of them presenting the final track at the Ferguson Commission meeting on July 13, 2015. You wouldn't be able to tell walking into this room that just a few weeks prior, some of them had never even spoken a word to each other. The chemistry was very organic!
Although they performed the song during the summit, shortly after finishing it, the Ferguson Commission would be the first time the group performed the final version of "Speak Out" in front of an audience; the group looked calmed and determined. The performance was very well received by attendees of the Ferguson Commission. Kudos to these artists for stepping up and speaking out! Stay tuned for final piece(s) from this project, airing on the Nine Network, starting August 2015.
